Science and engineering principles of photonics and optoelectronics, that provide foundation to a broad range of technologies from internet to lighting, from lasers to DVD, from satellite images to computer display, from solar cells to single molecule detection. Topical content: light as waves in media, on surface, and through holes; interference and waveguiding; light generation by spontaneous emission or by stimulation; LED, Laser, Photodetector, Optical amplifier and modulator, etc.
Prerequisite: ENGN 0510 or equivalent.
